Relationships During Lockdown
“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.”
— Oscar Wilde
It’s a tough time for everyone at the moment, and it’s a tough time for couples. Whether you’re unable to see each other due to distance during lockdown or you’re struggling to keep things fresh and exciting with everything being closed. I’ve seen lots of couples spending every waking second with each other because they’re both out of work and have nothing else to do, which is lovely, but is destined for trouble (except if you’re one of those couples that “never fight”.. just you wait, it’s still early days, you will eventually). You need time away from one another to give each other personal space and more importantly, time to miss each other. If you’re together constantly you’re bound to get on each other’s nerves and project your stress out on them. Which will more than likely lead to a toxic relationship.
This second lockdown without the scorching Summer weather like the first one may reveal some cracks in your relationship. You might start to think that they’re not actually the one for you. Now that there is nowhere open to go out on a date the fun has stopped. I know couples that always have to go overboard on every date with dinner, drinks, and a show or constant ‘spontaneous’ weekends away. Which are all well and good, but if you can’t enjoy doing absolutely nothing together and feel uncomfortable in their company when there is silence, then your relationship is primarily focused on entertainment and adrenaline rather than a deep meaningful connection. It makes you wonder if they’re really interested in you or just how much fun you are.
For many couples, it is a great test for them. The lockdown will make yous stronger than ever in a challenging way. It will make yous appreciate the simple things together in life. It will encourage your creativity to be inventive in your date ideas. If you can happily make it through a lockdown together well then I’d say more than likely you’re onto a winner, hang onto them!
