Eamonn Doyle – Irish Contemporary Photography

March 15, 2019 @ 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Venue: Royal Hibernian Academy, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2
Time: 11am – 5pm
Wheelchair Accessible: Yes

The Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) and St. Patrick’s Festival, in association with Fundación Mapfre will present a major exhibition of work by world-acclaimed Irish photographer Eamonn Doyle. Running in the RHA, Dublin from March 15 to April 22, Eamonn Doyle – Irish Contemporary Photography is the world premiere of Doyle’s exhibition, and the starting point for a world tour of the collection.Over the past five years, Eamonn Doyle rapidly emerged into the contemporary photographic world with his Dublin Trilogy, the self-published books; i, ON and End, and most recently with his new series, K, which he photographed in the west of Ireland. This exhibition will be Doyle’s first major and most complete showing of his current work in his home town, and will feature a staggering 146 images, 103 of which will be up to 2.5 metres in size. When Doyle’s work is staged together as a whole, its collective dynamic and sensory drama becomes truly apparent, resonating with music, cinema and theatre.  In turn the work manages to break with traditions of photography while simultaneously becoming a new eye in the evolution of those traditions.

For a limited run, from March 15 – 24, Doyle will also present Made in Dublin, a dynamic multi-media immersive installation designed by Niall Sweeney and featuring music by David Donohoe, words by Kevin Barry and a nine-screen cinematic surround-sound panoramic work of 10,000 images.

The exhibition also sees the launch of a new publication by the same name Made in Dublin, published by Thames & Hudson, which brings together the Dublin trilogy plus new photographs as one in an exhilarating, cinematic book featuring specially written text vignettes by prize-winning author Kevin Barry.  “There is a threaded pulse that runs beneath the surface of this street. Sometimes, in one of those quiet, eerie moments of the night when the city briefly stills itself, as if to open out its sighs, you can almost hear it — you can hear it as a kind of low, insistent throbbing, almost a rhythmic sequence, and at once you’ll know that it contains dark information. It tells us that we are all being drawn in the same general direction. It tells us that we are all being led along the thread of the pulse. It tells us that we are all on the way out.”  — Kevin Barry, from Eamonn Doyle: Made In Dublin, Thames & Hudson, 2019.

The exhibition will continue to Fundación Mapfre, Madrid, September 2019.
