Ring out the old year, cheer in the new. The Chinese New Year that is. Travel with us to the land of vast landscapes and a timeless musical tradition with its own rich beauty.
José Serebrier, one of the most recorded classical artists in history, takes to the podium for an evening of surprises, wonders and pulse-quickening, heart-stopping emotion showcasing a tune-filled meeting of East and West.
Virtuoso Chinese musicians Yang Xue (playing the keening, two-stringed erhu fiddle), Wang Jingjing (the vibrant ‘Chinese lute’ pipa) and Ning Yingjie (the achingly beautiful bamboo flute) join us to help celebrate two modern Chinese masters and their love songs to the magnificence of China’s remarkable countryside, its sights and sounds.
Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture sparkles with energy and is lit up by traditional Chinese instruments that will transport you to another world.
China’s most famous living composer, Xiaogang Ye, pays evocative tribute to China’s most populated region and a thriving regional capital with an ancient heritage with his Sichuan Image and Cantonese Suite. Composed for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, Starry Night is a firework display in music, featuring ‘subtle, sophisticated’ (Belfast Telegraph) Irish pianist Gary Beecher and the internationally acclaimed New Dublin Voices.
And from China’s neighbour, Russia, Alexander Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances (source of the melting melody for Stranger in Paradise) provides a ripely romantic conclusion to an evening of enchanting colours, surging passions and exotic sounds sure to hypnotise and delight.
