The Art of Faking It: The Science of Forgery in Art

April 4, 2018 @ 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

The Art of Faking It: The Science of Forgery in Art

Located in the Paccar Theatre (Trinity College).

The Art of Faking It, probes the proliferation of fakes in the world of art. For as long as there have been artists, there have been forgers; not just fraudsters but masters of deception. For every related scandal there is a criminal at the centre who not only produces a convincing fake, but who also understands how to corrupt the very systems of attributions and authenticity relied on by the art market. Featuring Dominic Milmo-Penny, art historian and dealer and an expert in the field, we will explore how science combats the forger and the contextualisation of the fake with a capital F.

About the speaker:

Dominic Milmo-Penny has worked in Dublin as a dealer in Irish, European and Impressionist paintings since 1974. To establish authenticity, he relies primarily on scientific analysis of the paintings he sells and these same skills are of equal value in the detection of fakes. He first came to the attention of the public in 1995 with his exposure as a fake of the National Gallery of Ireland’s Goose Girl painting. With an interest in science from childhood, he trained as a compositor, studied printing science, and spent his early career working with pica measurement and the lpi dot system. He continues to employ these skills today when examining paintings. Analysing the dots, he steals the march on his opponents who look only at the blobs of paint or, even worse, photographs of the blobs.
